JALAN BESAR CONSERVATION AREA

The Jalan Besar Conservation Area features over 230 shophouses with a rich history spanning almost eight decades, from the 1880s to the 1960s. The area includes well-preserved pre-war terrace houses along Petain Road, showcasing Chinese Baroque-style architecture with neo-classical and Peranakan influences. These shophouses are part of Singapore's heritage, with intricate designs featuring symmetrical lines, delicate ornaments, and ceramic tiles. The conservation area was officially designated in 1991 by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
